Heiko Pohl, M.D.
Dr. Pohl is a gastroenterologist at the White River Junction VA Medical Center and part of the WRJ VAMC Outcomes Group.
Dr. Pohl's research interests revolve around clinical practice of endoscopy. The questions “Does it make sense what we are doing?” and “How can we do things better?” are the main driving forces behind his inquiries. Projects include clinical studies on colonoscopy with attention to polyp detection and resection, and on upper endoscopy with emphasis on Barrett screening and surveillance. Broader view projects use population based data to examine esophageal adenocarcinoma incidence (SEER database) and utilization of upper endoscopy in the Medicare population. A current project aims at examining whether exposure to colonoscopy and intensity of colonoscopy use at VA medical centers are associated with a reduction in colorectal cancer mortality.
